Making it Look Easy: An Automated Demo for Registry Promotion

Tammy Pilisuk, Immunization Branch, CA Dept. of Health Services, 2151 Berkeley Way, Rm. 712, Berkeley, CA, USA

BACKGROUND:
California has nine operating regional immunization registries at various stages of implementation. Six of these use a State-supported registry software application known as CAIR. A demo was developed for promotional purposes to give medical practices a quick look at the application functionality and ease of use.

OBJECTIVE:
The demo was created to provide a tool for registry staff to bring to meetings, exhibits, and cliic visits in order to "demystify" the immunization registry application, demonstrate how easy it is to use and display core features.

METHOD:
The demo was developed at the state level using an off-the-shelf software product customized with screen shots from the CAIR registry application and narrative accompaniment. Registry staff provided input on the most important elements to cover. A draft was reviewed by a committee of experienced registry trainers and outreach staff to ensure that the final demo would meet their needs.

RESULT:
The resulting demo supports two uses. First it is a presentation tool for registry staff to take into the field. Additionally, it is posted online as a self-directed application so that any interested health care worker can view it. The demo offers the presenter/viewer the flexibility to run through sequential modules or to go directly to specific features.

CONCLUSION:
The demo serves an important purpose for registry promotion across the state. It is a "reality check" for potential customers to more easily grasp the concept of how a registry works. It is also convenient and self contained and can be downloaded from a CD-ROM on to any computer for easy viewing or accessed via the web for individual providers who can get a mini guided tour at their own convenience.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
Audience members will learn about the process of developing the demo, what decisions were made to streamline the content ditinguishing this from a training application, and lessons learned in customizing the demo from the technical perspective to ensure that it would be inviting and user-friendly for all who use it.
