Flu Campaign: Reaching out to the Underserved

Irene Litwak, Danbury Visiting Nurse Association, 4 Liberty St, Danbury, CT, USA

BACKGROUND:
Danbury, CT is a city of over 70,000 with a large population of Latinos, Asians and African Americans who have traditionally come in small numbers to our flu clinics. A different approach was needed to reach out to this largely underserved group.

OBJECTIVE:
Create a Flu Campaign that would address:
1. Education
2. Location of clinics
3. Funding low cost vaccination
4. Promotion

METHOD:
Clinics were held and attendance data was collected at all clinics.

RESULT:
Over 600 hundred people received the flu vaccine at our special outreach sites.

CONCLUSION:
The Flu Campaign was a success. Posters and fliers were distributed throughout the area promoting the clinics. Clinics were held in locations familiar to the underserved. Low cost vaccine contributed to the large turnout.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
How to organize a community outreach campaign.
Getting partners in the community involved in the event.
How to fund the event.
