Implementation of LAIV (Flu Mist) in Public Health Influenza Program

Christina T. Coenen, Nursing Division, Summit County Health Department, 1100 Graham Rd. Circle, Stow, OH, USA

Learning Objectives for this Presentation:

By the end of the presentation participants will be able to:
1. Define the population for whom LAIV is indicated
2. Identify the value of incorporating LAIV into a LHD Influenza program
3. Identify strategies to implement LAIV into their local Influenza program

Background:

Annually in the United States over 30,000 people die from influenza. Vaccination is proven to reduce the spread of influenza, reducing the number of deaths and hospitalizations. When influenza vaccine is in short supply healthy populations age 5-50 years old are ineligible for influenza vaccines. This population is most likely to spread influenza virus as they work, go to school, public places and care for the sick and at risk population.

Setting:

Public Health clinics, including community clinics, local schools, nursing homes, businesses, and existing immunization clinics.

Population:

Local Health Departments, private healthcare providers, nursing agencies providing community based influenza clinics.

Project Description:

This presentation will show how LAIV was implemented in various immunization settings. Included in the discussion will be staff education including proper administration, how to answer patient questions and concerns, how to store and handle LAIV, and finally the population targeted to receive LAIV. Strategies included in the discussion and relevant to the success of this program was community education including health care providers and patients on the positive impact LAIV would have on the health of the community.

Results/Lessons Learned:

Implementation of LAIV presented challenges for both the health care providers and the patients. Education and preparation facilitated seamless implementation of LAIV. Alternative methods of vaccine administration may prove vital in upcoming pandemic/Avian flu crisis. Local health departments play a key role in education of healthcare providers and community acceptance of LAIV.
