Learning Objectives for this Presentation:

By the end of the presentation participants will be able to develop a collaborative community based drive-thru flu program, targeting populations with ambulation impairment, and realize the similarity in setting up mass vaccination clinics in emergency situations.

Background:

The "Drive-Thru Flu Clinic" was an idea stemming from the desire to increase accessibility to flu shots for county senior citizens, especially for those with ambulation issues. Three major community partners worked collaboratively to develop the project - York County Area Agency on Aging, WellSpan Health, and the York City Bureau of Health.

Setting:

The Drive-Thru Flu Clinic took place at a newly established college campus in The City of York. This location provided a familiar and easily accessible site for participants who came from all parts of York County.

Population:

The clinic was promoted for persons age 65 and older and other persons at high risk for acquiring the flu, and especially for people with ambulation issues.

Project Description:

Funding for the project came from each of the organizations, and from additional grants submitted specifically for the event. Numerous businesses surrounding the drive-thru clinic site provided support through donations to volunteer workers and persons receiving flu shots. The clinic was held for four hours on a Sunday afternoon, allowing family member to attend the clinic on a non-work day.

Results/Lessons Learned:

The surveys received from drive-thru clinic participants indicated a high level of satisfaction. Many nurses and staff members were available at all times to answer questions prior to vaccine administration. Interpreters were available for Spanish speaking clients. The total time from registration to administration of flu vaccine averaged 12 minutes. The event also served to improve community collaboration between participating agencies. This same clinic "blue print" could be used in our community if faced with the need for mass vaccinations or medication distribution.
