Using Registries to Improve Employee Health Immunization Management

Carole J. Joyce, Mountain Park Health Centers, 635 E. Baseline Road, Phoenix, AZ, USA

Learning Objectives for this Presentation:

By the end of the presentation participants will be able to understand how a registry improves employee health immunization management.

Background:

The Arizona State Immunization Information System (ASIIS) is a birth-to-death registry. Reporting of children's immunizations has been required by statute since 1998.

Setting:

Mountain Park Health Centers are Federally Qualified Health Centers. They use ASIIS to track and report childhood and adult immunizations, to recall children and adults with high risk medical conditions for immunizations, and to recall patients after a vaccine shortage has ended.

Population:

Mountain Park Health Centers have 347 employees. Hepatitis B, Tdap and annual influenza vaccines are routinely offered to employees at no charge.

Project Description:

Mountain Park Health Centers were the first clinics in Arizona to adapt ASIIS for use for employee health immunization tracking. Employees are screened while in line, and data collected on a roster. Data is either entered directly or uploaded to the registry from an electronic copy of the roster. When the pandemic flu priority group definitions are finalized, they will be incorporated into ASIIS high-risk categories.

Results/Lessons Learned:

Multiple mechanisms were used effectively to get employees to participate in vaccine events. Using the registry consolidates immunization information and makes it portable. Many employees now entering the workforce have existing childhood immunization records, permitting us to avoid over-immunization. As this is adopted, new employees come with records of immunization by previous employers, also reducing over-immunization.
The registry can be used to document immunization of healthcare workers. This will be a valuable resource in a pandemic response situation.
