Scott Spillmann, Medical Center Employee & Occupational Health Services, Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, Medical Center Boulevard, Winston Salem, NC, USA and Vivian W. Barbee, Medical Center Employee/Occupational Health Services, Wake Forest University/Baptist Medical Center, Medical Center Boulevard, Winston Salem, NC, USA.

Learning Objectives for this Presentation:

By the end of the presentation, participants will be able to: 1. Describe the baseline efforts of an influenza vaccination campaign in a large medical center; 2. Identify and recruit existing resources to maximize influenza vaccination opportunities; and 3. Describe low cost or budget neutral strategies for education, publicity, and process evaluation.

Background:

Annual influenza vaccination is the best way to reduce the transmission of influenza in health care settings. The ACIP continues to recommend vaccination for all health care workers however; vaccination rates remain low at 36%. Our vaccination campaign remains flexible as we continuously refine and adapt processes to accommodate cost constraints, and unknowns regarding vaccine supply and delivery.

Setting:

Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center (WFUBMC) is composed of North Carolina Baptist Hospital, and of Wake Forest University Health Sciences, which includes Wake Forest University School of Medicine.

Population:

The combined faculty, employees, medical students, PA students, Graduate students, and volunteers is approximately 12,500.

Project Description:

Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center initiated a diversified approach for influenza vaccination. This includes campaign coordinators vaccinating coworkers in their respective work areas, expanding publicity, refining electronic communications, outreach approach of satellite clinics, and offering vaccinations to individuals on their first day of employment during influenza vaccination season.

Results/Lessons Learned:

WFUBMC has a record of sustained increased in influenza vaccination rates, exclusive of restrictive year. Current influenza vaccination rates exceed 60% of the combined targeted population.
