Lillian Spreng, CDPHE-A4-DCEED-IMM, Colorado Immunization Program, 4300 Cherry Creek Drive South, Denver, CO, USA and Jamie Damico, Immunization Section, Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, DCEED-IMM-A4, 4300 Cherry Creek Drive South, Denver, CO, USA.

Learning Objectives for this Presentation:

By the end of the presentation participants will be able to:
1. Identify 3 major areas of focus in the immunization course
2. Develop testing material as it relates to content of course
3. Identify supporting materials to enhance course content

Background:

Immunizations information is complex and frequently intimidating for child care providers juggling many tasks in the child care setting. Adding to this complexity is the need to know some basic rules and regulations regarding immunizations, immunization schedules and the use of forms for several aspects of immunization compliance. Colorado has ranked 50th in immunization rates for two year olds until this summer and it is critical to find interventions that will increase immunization knowledge of child care providers.

Setting:

The Basic Immunization Course will be provided to all providers in the child care setting and child care conferences and conferences for the licensing staff who monitor child care settings.

Population:

The population will include all child care providers as well as licensing people.

Project Description:

An immunization course for child care providers was developed in 2003 and was the beginning of a process to educate and test individuals caring for children in the child care setting where immunizations are critical in protecting children from vaccine preventable diseases. That course has been enhanced and will be distributed before the end of 2005. It is a demonstration project that includes the use of a survey to provide feedback on the effectiveness of the course. The course will then be altered and again enhanced to meet the learning needs of child care providers.

Results/Lessons Learned:

The anticipated results will include increased learning about all aspects of immunizations and increased confidence among child care providers regarding immunization compliance in their facility.
