Allison R. Christ, US Army, Military Vaccine Agency, 5113 Leesburg Pike, Suite 402, Falls Church, VA, USA

Learning Objectives for this Presentation:

1. Identify immunization standards for non-traditional settings
2. Describe initiatives the Military Vaccine (MILVAX) Agency has implemented to improve immunization services throughout the Department of Defense (DoD)

Background:

Recommendations for quality standards in non-traditional immunization programs from several national committees were recently incorporated as standards for delivery of military vaccines into the DoD Joint Regulation: Immunization and Chemoprophylaxis. The MILVAX Agency, lead agency responsible for disseminating information about DoD immunization policies, is developing several methods in which DoD immunization personnel are empowered to meet these standards.

Setting:

Various DoD immunization delivery points throughout the world.

Population:

Providers, Nurses, Pharmacists, Logisticians and Healthcare Specialists within DoD.

Project Description:

The MILVAX Agency expanded its services to offer resources and courses related to immunizations in its newest feature; “Immunization University”, a collection of guidelines and training resources to help healthcare providers make every immunization an excellent one. Designed to enhance the skills of healthcare workers from a variety of professional and para-professional backgrounds, "Immunization University" offers training on vaccine products and immunization services through distance learning and on-site classes. Courses are managed on-line at the MILVAX Agency website, much like a university registrar's office. Resources available without registering in the "Immunization University" are: the Competency Assessment File (CAF) for Healthcare Workers, the Clinic Quality Improvement Program (C-QIP); a program developed to assist clinics in achieving immunization standards, clinic directories, adverse event guidelines, links to the Vaccine Healthcare Center services (e.g. case management for adverse events), Vaccine Information Statements (VIS), and various other resources for immunization clinic personnel.

Results/Lessons Learned:

Committed to providing a single location for access to a wide range of training and products relating to quality immunization services, MILVAX Agency assists participants improve immunization services throughout DoD while receiving credit for documented training
