Dawn Contreras and Tammy Sullivan. Family and Consumer Sciences, Michigan State University Extension, 240 Agriculture Hall, East Lansing, MI, USA

Learning Objectives for this Presentation:

By the end of the presentation participants will be able to recognize the benefit of a state agency and university partnership to deliver a physician peer education program on immunization.

Background:

In 1994 Michigan had the lowest immunization rate of all States in the Nation for children 19 to 35 months of age. A variety of agencies in Michigan came together to address this issue.

Setting:

The Michigan Department of Community Health had:
• The content base for an immunization program
• The fiscal resources to conduct a statewide program
• Ability to reach the target audience
Michigan State University had:
• Expertise in program planning, facilitation, and evaluation
• Ability to conduct empirical research
• Human capacity to carry out the daily activities

Population:

Physicians and other health care providers.

Project Description:

• 21 physicians were recruited and trained to conduct immunization updates.
• CME accredited educational materials were developed & used at all sessions.
• Evaluation protocol and instruments were developed.
• Knowledge and behavior changes were studied through a pre-test and post-test, quasi-experimental research design.
• The free program was advertised and implemented at grand rounds sessions, medical conferences, and group practices.
• From January 1997 to September 2005 12,691 physicians have been reached through 407 lectures.

Results/Lessons Learned:

• This program played a role in positively impacting Michigan's immunization rates.
• The program's evaluation shows 6 to 9 months following the program participants have sustained positive changes in knowledge and behaviors when compared to a control group.
• The program has evolved from one educational module to seven modules and supplemental materials that were designed to meet the changing needs of the environment.
• A long-standing relationship between Michigan State University Extension and the Michigan Department of Community Health.
