Not IF, but WHEN: The Threat of Pandemic Influenza

Michael Olesen, Infection Prevention and Epidemiology, Abbott Northwestern Hospital, 800 E 28th St - Mail Stop 16400, Minneapolis, MN, USA

Learning Objectives for this Presentation:

By the end of the presentation participants will be able to...
1. Explain causes for differences in the epidemic curve for a normal influenza season and that which occurred during the Spanish Flu pandemic of 1918.
2. List characteristics required for an influenza virus to trigger a pandemic, and which of these have been met by the H5N1 avian flu virus.
3. Identify problems that may arise in healthcare facilities during a pandemic, and resources needed to assist in planning a response.

Background:

This presentation covers the problems encountered during the 1918 Spanish Influenza pandemic and discusses the problems that will arise today when another major pandemic strikes. It provides strategies for prevention and mitigation activities.

Setting:

A historical context is drawn between socioeconomic conditions in 1918 and today and the impacts from these changes.

Population:

The presentation provides a global perspective around the attack rates and mortality that could result and gives impacts on some of the higher-risk populations in the US and explains why these populations are at risk.

Project Description:

The presentation is aimed at raising awareness around the serious nature of this threat in order to drive action to plan for the arrival of the next pandemic.

Results/Lessons Learned:

Successful strategies for dealing with normal influenza, the Spanish Flu, and SARS are used to recommend prevention activities that could be implemented today.
