Preventing the Unthinkable: Delivering Life-Saving Messages to Key Audiences

Centennial I/II
Keeping patients safe wherever they receive their care can be daunting and requires innovative communication strategies to capture healthcare providers’ and patients’ attention and break through the other “noise” of information being provided to them. In this session, participants will learn about three innovative, award-winning campaigns that work to prevent healthcare-associated infections and adverse drug events: • Every year, 60,000 cancer patients are hospitalized for chemotherapy-induced neutropenia, putting them at greater risk of infection. To address this, CDC, the CDC Foundation, and Amgen developed Preventing Infections in Cancer Patients, a powerful campaign providing patients, families, and healthcare professionals with tools designed to help reduce the risk of life-threatening infections during a cancer patient’s chemotherapy treatment. • Each year, one of every 150 two–year–olds visits an emergency department (ED) in the United States for an unintentional medication overdose. CDC and the Consumer Healthcare Products Association (CHPA) Educational Foundation, in partnership with the PROTECT Initiative, launched Up and Away and Out of Sight – an educational program reminding parents and caregivers about safely storing medicine to prevent such potentially life-threatening overdoses. Up and Away and Out of Sight utilizes timely news hooks and relevant data to make medicine safety more top-of-mind. You’ll hear from her the strategies used to ensure target audiences of various backgrounds and educational levels would grasp the critical message. • Drug-resistant infections have become a “nightmare” for healthcare facilities. Hear how CDC has utilized its Vital Signs releases to increase awareness and action to protect patients and save lives.
