Tutorial – USE of SNOMED in HL7 Messaging This tutorial will present the reference terminology SNOMED with a particular emphasis on the proper use within the context of public health messaging. Topics will include the overall benefits of standard terminology adoption; the structure of the standard including specific concept hierarchies and relationships; pre-coordination and post-coordination; recent significant changes to the organism hierarchy; and the application of terminology subsets to specific fields within laboratory HL7 messages. Discussion on the benefits of using SNOMED-CT Concept Unique Identifiers and Description Identifiers versus Original SNOMEDIDs. Examples of concept maps between local terminology and HL7 standard terminologies will also be provided.
