Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) was the first healthcare provider to send data near real time to the BioSense RT system in December 2005. When it came time to expand the limited data set they were initially sending, BIDMC’s CIO John Halamka suggested that they ‘lead the target’ and develop an XML output from their Clinical Information System (CIS) that could be used to feed BioSense.
To prove the viability of the approach, BIDMC agreed to deliver in XML all currently defined BioSense data types, including ADT, Census, ED Clinical observations, Microbiology orders & results, Radiology orders and results, and Pharmacy orders.
This project has created a new input option for other existing and future BioSense data sources and will serve as a case study to showcase the interoperability benefits that can be achieved by HIT vendors and users by investing in HITSP standard solutions.
This presentation will recap the results of the BIDMC/BioSense XML pilot and the challenges and benefits of this new and innovative approach.
