Authors: Sabine, Ashley, Christie, Nicole

Abstract:

To advance the public health informatics mission successfully, an effective, competent and confident leadership team must be at the helm of the organization. A successful leader not only relies on the availability of innovative resources, technology, and tools, but also on his / her own ability and capacity to lead people in the right direction and to advance the organizational mission and vision.  Leadership development is an essential tool used to increase accountability, transparency, and to foster engagement in collaboration in the modern public health informatics community.

Leadership development provides a framework to enhance the knowledge, proficiency, and skills required for managers to influence organizations effectively and can be defined as a process of activities that enhance the personal attributes of leadership skills within individuals and organizations.  The act of leadership development builds the individual as he or she works to shape the necessary skill set(s) needed to be an effective and charismatic leader.  This presentation will provide an overview of leadership development, the benefits of building knowledge competencies, various leadership development programs will be illustrated including how each ties to succession planning, and finally the presentation will provide leading practices applicable specifically to public health informatics initiatives.

The PHIN audience will benefit from this session by obtaining a working knowledge of the processes required to build leadership development competencies within an organization.  The National Center for Public Health Informatics (NCPHI) will be profiled as a case study illustrating leadership development initiatives in action. This increased awareness will translate into practice by increasing the use of strategic planning techniques to enable transformational public health informatics initiatives.
