The California Adolescent Sexual Health Work Group (ASHWG) – Background and Formation

Paul Gibson, STD Control Branch, California Department of Public Health, 645 S. Bascom Avenue, Room 163, San Jose, CA, USA

Description:
After participating in a 2003 NSM, the CA team members conducted a mini-version of the NSM with key CDPH/CDE administrators to obtain their buy-in. This resulted in the formation of an expanded work group charged with developing specific collaboration priorities. This work group was endorsed as the Adolescent Sexual Health Work Group (ASHWG) in May 2005, and immediately established Data Integration and Core Competencies Subcommittees to address two of the collaboration priorities. Achievements over the last two years include initial synchronized STD, HIV, teen birth data; Core Competency Guidelines, and a state-wide public opinion survey on comprehensive sexuality education.
