To assess the cost of the “I Know” home test program, cost of developing the campaign materials was determined. Costs for small media, database development, specimen collection mailers, test processing and follow-up were also included. Costs were identified as being incurred before the campaign launched or after, for estimating ongoing costs once campaign content was developed. Costs were combined with outcome measures (tests, positive tests, cases treated) to assess cost-effectiveness. Each requested kit was $6.50, and test processing cost was $17.75. When considering ongoing costs, saved patient travel and clinic visit costs, the intervention was potentially cost-saving over clinic-based testing.
