This introduction to the symposium will discuss heterogeneity and concentration in STD risk behaviors and STD incidence across geographical location, race/ethnicity, and age.  Because STD risk behaviors and STD incidence are not evenly distributed across the general population, the prioritization of populations and targeting of STD prevention interventions can greatly improve the impact and cost-effectiveness of STD prevention efforts.  Such improvements in return on investment are especially critical in an era when prevention resources are limited and the need for accountability is enhanced.
