Background:

Bioscape Digital (Bioscape), in Partnership with the National Association of Chronic Disease Directors (NACDD) and Ortho Clinical Diagnostics (OCD) is working to advance health literacy through interactive kiosks and tablets.

Program background:

The National Association of Chronic Disease Directors will apply its demonstrated experience in designing and implementing outcomes-based, community-centered pilot programs.

The pilot program seeks to: - Promote better health outcomes - Advance patient-physician dialogue - Empower patients in patient-centered care

The solution provides, via tablets and kiosks, instant quick hitting interactive knowledge aimed to educate, engage and immerse patients. Included in the platform is a patient acquisition module aimed to either acquire or at the very least drive patients to engage further in their health by visiting the website and corresponding web channels.

Additionally, the solutions promote a basis for the prevention of common preventable diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease and obesity. Pilot sites will be selected from communities with a Federal Qualified Health Center (s)_(FQHC) or a Community Health Center that serves medically underserved communities.

Evaluation Methods and Results:

Evaluation of the program will use qualitative data collection methods (interviews of providers, clinic managers and a sample of patients), utilize patient and provider surveys to assess satisfaction with the pilot tools and knowledge, attitudinal, behavioral and health systems changes. Findings will be aggregated in an Outcomes Report that will point to program refinements before scaling it nationally.

Conclusions:

Delivering relevant and timely education to a captive patient population is critical to engage patients in their own health, however utilizing pamphlets and other outdated mediums are not sufficient.  Today's population, a population of Twitter, Facebook and mobile internet require captive, innovative and interactive tools to engage in educational content.

Implications for research and/or practice:

Such a platform only is the tip of the iceberg.  In the future, custom, interactive content will not be the exception but rather the norm; especially in the prevention of chronic diseases.
