During this session the participants will learn the genesis for the PHIN-SRM (Secure Reliable Messaging) open source movement and the planned architecture.

PHIN-MS (Public Health Information Network - Messaging System) has been helping public health organizations exchange messages securely over the internet for over six years.  PHIN-SRM will be the next generation of open source software that enables public health organizations to exchange messages securely and reliably using current technologies.

This session will present the architecture.  The PHIN-SRM product is planned to be built as a highly scalable Java Enterprise Application using JEE5, EJB 3.0 and complete WS open standards including WSIT (Web Services Interoperability Technology).   The architecture will be “grid” enabled.  The implementation of this architecture will interoperate with NHIN Connect and PH Grid.

The strategic planning of the product will embrace the existing, robust PHIN community by gathering its input. This strategic input can continue through all generations of the product since PHIN-SRM will be an open source model. The PHIN community can actively contribute to functionality both locally and at the community level via this model.

The following are the key drivers behind taking the application to an open source model and the benefits to the PHIN community:

·        The ability to download and tailor code to local requirements.

·        The ability to extend the source code for the benefit of all partners

·        An increase in product visibility.

·        Enabling partners to view the source code for education purposes

Initially, PHIN-SRM will be released to the open source community as the “Community Edition.”  In this model, the “distribution” of the code will be free under an open source public license, and there will initially be a selected community allowed to contribute code.  The code and binary distribution will be hosted from Sourceforge.net.
