Administrative claims data (client enrollment, clinical encounter and laboratory information) from large-scale family planning and managed care programs can be used to identify incident PID.  We developed a PID case definition using ICD-9 codes associated with PID and pharmacy treatment codes for PID treatment as recommended by the 2006 CDC Treatment guidelines to identify cases among female clients of a large family planning program during 2003-2007.  The number of PID cases ranged from 1655 in 2005 to 2031 by 2007.  Outpatient clinical encounter data containing specific PID diagnoses for female managed care enrollees were also analyzed for trends.  The annual total number of PID cases identified ranged from 792 in 2003 to a high of 928 in 2006; females aged 25 and younger accounted for half of all cases.
