PID is a reportable syndrome of public health importance that is significantly under reported. We seek to evaluate current PID surveillance in San Mateo County, a northern California county of 750,000 persons.  Capture-recapture methods will estimate total PID prevalence from data available in San Mateo County.  Cases reported to the health department will be crossed referenced to data from Emergency Departments, ambulatory, and hospital discharge, to estimate the total number of cases.  With the goals of determining a gold standard for PID surveillance and integrating health information systems in one local health jurisdiction, data quality, timeliness, sensitivity and positive predictive value will be determined.
