C3 Successes and Challenges in Surveillance and Monitoring Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID)

Background/Purpose: Reducing STD-related infertility is a top priority at the national, state, and local levels. However, progress towards these goals is often poorly measured using chlamydia screening and positivity. Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID) is an important infertility-related outcome; however, surveillance for this condition is generally poor.

Objectives of Symposium: Describe national PID surveillance efforts and how several jurisdictions in California have approached the challenge of surveillance, including a statewide initiative to assess barriers and gaps in PID surveillance.

Implications for Programs, Policy, and/or Research: Identifying efficient and valid surveillance mechanisms for PID can help monitor successes and prioritize resources.
