Allowing cultural factors to influence curriculum design: meeting the needs of Native Youth Several challenges were identified that hinder the development and implementation of appropriate and effective STD interventions for American Indian/Alaska Native populations. A major challenge is the lack of culturally appropriate interventions. To develop culturally appropriate interventions, the project used a multi-disciplinary workgroup including Native youth, Native elders, public health experts, and health curriculum developers. This multi-disciplinary team developed a holistic, skill-based curriculum that addresses STD, HIV and teen pregnancy prevention.
