Michigan’s STD Program has integrated morbidity reporting, case management, and over 30 years of historical data into Michigan’s NEDSS solution, the Michigan Disease Surveillance System. Our experiences in this endeavor, from funding to business requirements gathering, beta testing, and training and deployment, can be shared to inform states pursuing similar paths.
Michigan’s system has particular strengths in HL7 messaging, case documentation and audit trails, cross-jurisdictional investigations, performance measure data monitoring, timeliness, and integration across all communicable disease programs. Issues we continue to improve on include lab result management, report building, speed and responsiveness, and training a statewide STD workforce.
