With the increasing demands of a modern STD program, Florida successfully built an STD application by documenting the re-engineered business processes and translating those into the implementation of a complete end-to-end application. The extensive process forced the program to address inefficiencies within long-standing procedures, redefine traditional methodologies to address current needs, incorporate a more “inclusive” and less “exclusive” approach, and integrate information technology tools like electronic laboratory reporting, mobile technology, and automated logic that improved the quality of data and services. The path was difficult, and many lessons were learned that should be shared with our sister programs.
