How do we view the  Guatemala studies through an ethical lens?  Are there basic, timeless ethical principles which were violated in the conduct of this research?  What are the responsibilities of the United States and of the STD research community to the Guatemalan communities that participated and were likely harmed?  Finally, with the full entry of the data collected, should the data be analyzed—or are they irrevocably tainted by the ethical conduct issues.  This presentation will provide a structured bioethical approach to these and other related questions.
