Centennial I/II
Every 5 years the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, which serve as the Federal nutrition policy, are reviewed by researchers and nutrition experts and released to the public with updated recommendations to help Americans achieve optimal health and reduce disease risk. With the release of Dietary Guidelines for Americans in 2010, the Center for Nutrition Policy and Promotion (CNPP) at the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) developed a multi-modal program to communicate the recommendations and drive the public to make healthier choices. CNPP first developed MyPlate, a simple and powerful icon to help inspire American make healthful choices and build a healthy plate at mealtimes. CNPP also tapped Ketchum to develop a website application to educate Americans about how the MyPlate icon and the 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans translated to their daily lives in meeting food group, nutrient, and physical activity goals. The proposed panel would bring together Robert C. Post, Associate Executive Director, CNPP/USDA, Jackie Haven, Director, Nutrition Marketing and Communication Division, CNPP/USDA, and Ken Buraker, Senior Vice President/Group Creative Director to present how the development and release of the 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans led to the creation of the MyPlate icon and SuperTracker. They will explore the challenges of educating and empowering the American public about making healthful food choices and how they conceived and developed new tools to make those choices better informed and easy to apply in their daily lives.
