Interoperability is the ability for different people and organizations to work together (inter-operate).  When applied to informatics systems, interoperability is defined as:
1.      "the ability of two or more systems or components to exchange information and
2.      to use the information that has been exchanged" (IEEE).

It is also defined as "the ability of a system or a product to work with other systems or products without special effort on the part of the customer".  (http://searchsoa.techtarget.com/sDefinition/0,,sid26_gci212372,00.html)

The exchange of standards-based public health data within a network of interoperable systems is a primary goal of PHIN.  This presentation will provide a high-level overview of interoperability along with a description of the concepts and terms associated with interoperability within the PHIN.

After setting the framework for interoperability, the presentation will include specific examples of tools and methods used by the LIMS Integration Project (LIMSi) to support LRN laboratories in their efforts to achieve interoperability per PHIN standards. These interoperability tools will enable each member or stakeholder to exchange standards-based LRN Health Level 7 (HL7) messages securely within the LRN.

Additional information and examples will be shared to describe the collaborative approach that CDC, LRN member laboratories and several LIMS vendors are taking.  The presentation will also include a status update on work done to date by both CDC and state partner(s).

Finally, the presentation will include an update on the future direction of the LIMS Integration effort.
